Earthquake Resistant Material: Fibre Reinforced Polymers

Image result for Fibre Reinforced Polymers
With the advancement in the development of new construction materials, research in concrete technology is gaining momentum with the development of materials like ploymers. Advanced materials are playing greater role in the construction of RCC structures.
Now a days due to the construction of Nuclear power plants and other such buildings, high performance concrete is in great demand through out the world. There are numerous applications of FRP in civil and structural engineering. These materials are in great demand for retrofitting the structures due to their performance.
Polymers are used to improve the properties of concrete. Polymers have distinct advantage due to their long life and strength to withstand the operating loads. Polymer concrete has superior qualities than ordinary concrete.
Advantages of Polymers:
  • Light in weight
  • Have good tensile strength
  • Have good resistance to moisture
  • Have good resistance to chemical attacks
  • Earthquake resistance of polymer concrete is 3 times more than the ordinary concrete
  • Can also be used in road construction

Short comings of Polymers:
  • Less longitudinal compression, lateral and torsion strength
  • No code and specification for implementation
  • Temperature has direct impact on durability
  • On burning they produce a toxic smoke
